OPEN CALL RESIDENCY // ALLIANCES – expanding the material based field

posted in: Okategoriserade | 0

Can materials create alliances on their own? Can materiality speak for itself or is it just a tool for the artist? How can the conversation between body and material be conducted? Do materials have an inherent performativity? Given the human need to form alliances, it is interesting to look at it from the perspective of materials.

The project takes off during GIBCA Extended with a series of lectures linked to the theme. There we examine the relationship of materials to the performative and how it is used in different artistic practices. Through the lectures, we dive into different artistic practices and lay a multifaceted foundation for the rest of the project. The lectures are available for artists in residency digitally.

The residency runs from February 1-28 2026 and is intended to be an arena for renewal and experimentation. Participants are encouraged to start from their own practice but be open to incorporating new elements through cross-pollination from other participants and previous lectures. We emphasize diversity and the possibility of intersectional interactions in the application process. Artists whose sole purpose is to produce based on finished ideas for an upcoming exhibition will not be prioritized. All our workshops and studios will be available and a prerequisite for participation is that you have knowledge of any of these to be able to work independently. Flexible attendance during the residency will not be an option as on-site exchange between artists will be a priority. To promote the exchange, we have studio talks once a week where all artists participate and we go through where in the process each one is. We have found this to be very rewarding as the group can work together on problem solving and development.

The residency ends with a public event February 28-March 1. This can be seen as a kind of presentation of the entire project where participating artists themselves are involved in designing the framework for how the presentation is done. Here we encourage collaboration, curiosity and development while being sensitive to those who are interested in a more traditional exhibition model.
